Tucked away in New York’s theater district lies a jewel of an Italian ristorante and enotecca —a favorite secret of local lunching business moguls, theater-goers, romantic diners and festive food-loving families. And owner Chef Paolo Catini, and family, like to keep it that way.

Lauded by Trip Advisor, The New York Times, Yelp and rewarded a coveted 24 by Zagat, the food is fresh, artisanal, organic when possible, and original. Dishes and menus represent classic Basso offerings as well as the best market fare of the season.

“…refined Italian fare in a white and beige room.” THE NEW YORK TIMES

The soothing clean, neutral, contemporary décor is the perfect canvas to the beautiful creations served up by maestro Chef and owner Paolo Marco Catini from Abruzzo—where food is an art and a passion. His seasonal dishes represent the best of what the market fares, and in addition to classic regional fare, also caters to our latest food trends with offerings like the finest gluten-free pastas and vegetarian specialties.

The wine list is as diverse and well-curated as the menu, with exquisite finds from small vineyards in Italy, you’ve probably never heard of but are likely not to forget.

“I’m delighted to bring my modern evolution of classic regional Italian culinary creations made with the finest fresh ingredients to New York’s midtown. We’ve created an oasis of delicious, fresh, ever-changing fare, and nothing makes me happier than to see our local customers come in several times a week for lunch or dinner.”

Chef Paolo Catini was born and raised in Abruzzo, land of some of the most beautiful wines, cheese and regional specialties in Italy. He is a graduate of the Culinary Instituto Alberghiero di Stato of Rieti, Italy and his innovative dishes have inspired many fine restaurants throughout Italy, California and New York.

Like most Abruzzesi, cooking is in his DNA. He began at his mother’s knee, with heirloom family recipes from his great-great grandmothers, on which he elaborates and evolves to our modern lighter palette perfection.
